How to Master Nunchi — Korea's Superpower

If you watch K-dramas, there’s one word you’ll hear all the time.

눈치 (nunchi)

눈치 (nunchi) means the ability to quickly read someone’s mood and the atmosphere of a room. It’s one of those Korean words that’s famously hard to translate into a single English word.

Examples

1. 눈치가 빠르네요 (nunchiga ppareuneyo) — You catch on quickly.
2. 눈치 좀 챙겨 (nunchi jom chaenggyeo) — Read the room. (casual)
3. 눈치 보지 마세요 (nunchi boji maseyo) — Don’t worry about what others think.

Polite vs. casual

With friends you can say 눈치 챙겨 (nunchi chaenggyeo); with someone senior, add honorifics: 눈치가 빠르시네요 (nunchiga ppareusineyo).

Culture note

In Korea’s relationship-focused society, nunchi is a survival skill. The drama Misaeng shows a rookie office worker growing by learning nunchi.
